Captain Grant Warren: The man behind the badge May 2, 2008

25 years on the job and Captain Grant Warren is just as excited about his work today as he was his first day. But for Warren, it was not an easy road to becoming a VCU officer.

Warren’s journey began when he received a criminal justice degree at North Carolina State. After graduation he served in the U.S Navy. Once he left the Navy he worked various security jobs. Then he worked for the department of corrections. He came to VCU to get his masters in public administration in the early 80’s. It was at this point that he decided he wanted to become a VCU officer.

Black female voters may have a hard time deciding at the polls this year.

It’s no secret that there is a close race between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination. And it’s no wonder that some voters are torn between race and gender.

Democratic voter Pamela Williams is still undecided.

“One of the candidates is a female and I’m kind of leaning towards that and the other candidate is also and African American and so I’m kind of geared towards that, too,” Williams said.

VCU’s Soul Food Cafe celebrates black history month April 19, 2008

Music, food, spoken word and community could all be found at VCU’s Soul Food Cafe.  Students were joined by other members of the community Monday night in celebration of Black History Month. The Soul Food Cafe is not an actual cafe, but rather an event created for people to enjoy African-American culture and performers.

Rufus Johnson, a vocalist for the band Chkngreese, performed at the Soul Food Cafe. Rufus is a self-proclaimed “old soul” who enjoys music from older musicians.

“Some of the influences are people who are vocalists and musicians. Al Greene, Donny Hathoway, Marvin Gaye, DeAngelo..people like that, who I like to call real musicians,” said Johnson.

Johnson tried to entertain the crowd but said he also wants people to remember their roots and history.

Well, the green meeting held on March 17, 2008 suggests that it’s just the beginning. At the meeting, the Student Government Association voiced their concerns to Dr. Trani about VCU becoming more environmentally friendly.
